What are Implant Overdentures?

Implant overdentures are a type of denture that is supported by dental implants. Unlike traditional dentures, which rest on the gums and are often held in place with adhesive, implant overdentures attach to implants that have been surgically placed into the jawbone. This type of denture can provide a more stable and comfortable fit, as well as improve the overall function and appearance of the mouth.

Getting Fitted for Dentures

Getting fitted for dentures is a multi-step process that begins with an initial consultation with your denture prosthetist. During this appointment, we will determine what kind of dentures are the right option for you.

Once it has been determined that implant overdentures are the best choice for you, implants will be surgically placed into the jawbone. After a healing period of several months, the dentist will attach bar or ball attachments to the implants and take impressions of the patient’s mouth to create the dentures. The dentures will then be adjusted to ensure a comfortable fit.

Once the dentures have been created, they will be ready to be fitted in office. During this appointment, we will evaluate how the dentures fit and make any necessary adjustments so that they fit comfortably and securely within your mouth.

Dentures should be comfortable and secure; however, they may require some adjustment during the first few weeks of wear in order for them to fit properly and securely. It is important to take good care of your dentures so that they stay in proper condition and last as long as possible – this includes cleaning them daily with a special brush and soaking them in solutions that are approved for use with dentures.

Types of Implant Overdentures

There are two main types of implant overdentures: bar-retained and ball-retained. In a bar-retained implant overdenture, a metal bar is attached to the implants and the denture is clipped onto the bar. This provides a secure fit and helps distribute the forces of biting and chewing more evenly across the implants. In a ball-retained implant overdenture, small attachments on the implants snap into corresponding attachments on the denture, holding it in place.
