What is a Dental Emergency?

Our dental team treats dental emergencies with the utmost care, skill, and attention – saving your teeth may depend on it.

We understand the pain, stress, and anxiety one may experience from a sudden acute oral condition or unexpected injury. One of our top priorities is to help put our patients at ease – from kids to seniors – by providing immediate pain relief and comforting dentistry care.

Not all oral injuries or acute oral conditions require emergency dental treatment. A minor chipped tooth from biting on a cherry pit or losing a filling can probably wait till you book the next available appointment.

For more severe tooth injuries, you should seek immediate treatment. However, choosing between a dentist and a hospital emergency department can be a critical decision.

A physical impact – such as a sports injury or a falling accident – that causes major damage to your teeth and gums, may also have resulted in concussion – and possible bleeding in your brain. In this case, it is advisable to go straight to a hospital emergency department for urgent medical assessment, observation, and treatment.

The following oral injuries and acute oral conditions definitely require emergency dental treatment (if not accompanied by any signs of head injury).

Common Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly—and when they do, fast action matters. Whether it's trauma, infection, or sudden pain, knowing what qualifies as a true dental emergency can help you get the right care quickly and avoid long-term damage.

Knocked-out Tooth

An avulsed tooth can be reimplanted successfully by a dentist within an hour of being knocked out.

Extruded Tooth

A tooth that has shifted from its usual position, and is in a "hanging by a thread" situation could be an emergency.

Broken Tooth

A piece of the tooth that has broken away, resulting in bleeding and dental pain.

Dental Abscess

Dental abscesses are painful infections of the tooth root and may be a dental emergency.

Severe Oral Bleeding

Bleeding as a result of trauma, that doesn't stop within a few minutes may need emergency care.

Serious Oral Infections

Infections with facial swelling and extreme pain can mean you need urgent dental care.

Broken or Lost Crowns

Broken crowns from a tooth that hasn't received root canal treatment can be a tooth emergency and you should see a dentist.

Severe Oral Pain

Pain as a result of dental trauma, even if there is no visible tooth damage.

Process of Receiving Emergency Treatment

If you think you have a dental emergency, start by calling our office. Our dentists or staff can provide instructions and advice regarding all types of dental emergencies. They will schedule you for a consultation to assess the situation. From there our dentists will decide if immediate action is needed and may continue with same day care if necessary.

Typically our dental emergency appointments are around 30 minutes in duration.
During your emergency appointment, your treating dentist will conduct an examination to assess and diagnose your oral condition, and discuss the most appropriate dental treatment solutions with you.

We understand that in some acute dental emergencies, immediate care and attention are necessary to save a tooth or treat a severe infection. We also offer immediate pain relief as a temporary measure before you are assessed for a more permanent dental solution to your oral condition.

When a dental emergency arises, the last thing you want to worry about is the surprise costs of treatment.

Emergency Care Services FAQ

Common dental emergencies can include a toothache, a broken tooth, a knocked-out tooth, lost filling, loose crown, or a dental abscess.

Most hospitals cannot do much for common dental emergencies. Call Choice Dental and we will see you as soon as possible.  However, if your neck starts to swell and your breathing is affected, please go to hospital straight away for urgent airway treatment.
Rinse your mouth with warm water and floss to remove any loose debris. If there is swelling, apply a cold compress to the area.  For pain relief, take painkillers like panadol and if allowed by your doctor/pharmacist, take ibuprofen too.  It is safe to take both panadol and ibuprofen at the same time.  Follow the directions on the box for each medication regarding dosage.

FREE DENTAL CONSULTATIONS FOR SAME DAY TREATMENT

If you are willing and able to make an informed decision about the treatment option that best suits your needs and budget by the end of your consultation, we may be able to schedule same-day treatment.

We will look for an opening in our schedules so that you won't have to return at a later date. This means your dental needs are conveniently assessed and treated on the same day you are in our clinic.

Another benefit for our emergency patients, who opt for same-day follow-up treatment, is the waiver of your dental consultation fee which will reduce your out-of-pocket expenses for the day.
